Panda Walk (Week 5)

Image
I finished my quadruped walk cycle animation today - I decided to do a panda because they're such adorable and funny creatures (and my favourite animal) and because their walk is quite interesting and slow. Unfortunately, I feel I didn't time this walk right as it's too fast, but I do think I got the offset timing of the front and back legs done well, though this would be easier to see if it was the correct walking speed for a giant panda. I made the back legs grey so they could be seen against the black of the front legs and fur pattern. I started this task doing a cat, but changed to a panda because I thought it would be easier, especially as the legs have a less specific shape, however I did realise after studying panda walks a bit closer that they actually walk in a similar way, with the back leg dragging forward before the front leg on the same side starts to move. I used this video on youtube as a reference video:

3D rendering (Week 5)

Image
Today in my 3D environment lesson, we learnt how to change the properties of a poly modelled object, as well as how to light it and use a camera. I found it really fun changing the settings and seeing the outcome, and especially moving the objects and lighting around and seeing what it looked like rendered and how the light and shadows interacted with each other in the space.

Finished Sound Project (Week 4)

Image
Here is my finished sound project of the mayfly advert: Production Report: I chose film choice 1 for my sound project, which is the Vodafone mayfly animated advert. I started my sound project by watching the video a few times, just taking it in and picturing the environment and what I would imagine the overall soundscape would be like. Then I watched it again a few more times, writing down the sounds that I knew/thought would appear, including as many details as possible. After writing a list, I went out with a recorder to record some ATMOS in a forest-like area with lots of birds, trying to emulate a jungle with lots of animals. This was especially tricky as there was roads and paths very nearby with people and cars making noises. I also recorded some sound effects like throwing stones and snapping twigs, a couple of which I softened by decreasing the levels to use in this project. After this, I then took out more recording equipment like the rifle mic to record small so...

3D modelling (Week 4)

Today we learnt a bit about how to use mudbox to paint and texure objects for Maya. I really enjoyed trying out the different stamp brushes, especially the leaf/earthy ones.

Tea Project (Week 4)

Image
Here is my finished animatic with timings and voice acting: First scene's voice acting was done by Emma King, and the second scene's voice acting was done by myself.

2D background shot animation test (Week 3)

Image
Here is my partially coloured background shot with a small background animation to test it out. You can also see my notes over the top of planning for Motion Studies (DGA120) when we'll be doing lots of character animation that will be added into this layout and background.

Motion Studies (Week 3)

Image
We were tasked with animating an on the spot walk cycle, one from the side and one from the front. Here is my side facing walk cycle: It is partially cleaned up, but still messy and wobbly in areas, which I'd like to change later. Here is my front facing walk cycle: Here are the reference videos my friend recorded of me doing the exaggerated angry walk:

Tea Project (Week 3)

Image
Today I have been developing my ideas for the tea project, and so far I have two scenes that I've scripted and story boarded, one of a mug on a pier and another of iced tea in a café. I was going to do the iced tea like this in a takeaway cup, but I changed my mind and made her a jar instead, as she has more personality. Above is the animatic made from the storyboards. It still needs changes in timing but I'm liking it so far. Here is the script: Tea Project Script ~ Seagull scene ~   Establishing shot of the pier and the mug to the right side of the frame. Mug sits on pier in Falmouth, perched by a lamp post with a view of the sea and the docks behind her.  “Ah, isn’t it so refreshing to have a cuppa by the sea!” She smiles and closes her eyes, looking up a bit as if soaking in the sunshine. Seagulls start cawing above her. She opens her eyes and scowls at them, proclaiming “Ugh, seagulls. Always making such a racket!” Then suddenly one o...

Tea Project (Week 2)

Image
Here was my idea for the tea project: Nostalgia, memories + rustic, earthy colours Small stuffed house full of trinkets and souvenirs, all blue/grey colours Granddaughter brings tea to grandmother When she is given tea, she flashbacks to seeing her husband from her POV smiling, giving her a cup of tea (in same house, but colours are warm and bright) Shows them from side, each with a cup of tea in one hand, and the other arms are holding each other (Back to present) Granddaughter is playing on the floor with toys and looks up to the grandma and is happy and giggling. Grandma sips cup of tea and smiles, shutting her eyes and slowly leaning back into her chair, resting the cup in her lap as small tears fall down her cheeks and she continues smiling, her tea keeping her memories alive. DGA130 - 2D Background shot (Week 2)

Image
We were tasked with doing a 2D background shot using this paragraph from 'The Projection Room'; 'There were clouds with soft, jewel-colored pastels bouncing off them. The sky was a soothing blue and met rolling, gold-green hills at the horizon. Summer trees swayed gently, reflected on a cool lake. There was a momentary flutter of birds across the sky, which added even more of a sense of movement and realism. In the foreground of the landscape was a boy's bicycle leaning against a tree. A path ran past the tree and along the water's edge and disappeared into the background.' I drew a small sketch of what the background could look like, trying to use the trees to show the distance and depth in the drawing. I drew a unicycle instead of a bicycle, but other than that I tried to include all the elements of the brief in my drawing. I then drew the drawing into photoshop, changing bits slightly like the clouds, which I tried to make bigger when they're hi...

DGA130 - 3D Modelling (Week 2)

Image
Today we tried out 3D modelling in Maya using wild west buildings as reference - here is my unfinished model on the right. I found it really fun making it so far, and I really look forward to finishing more of it, and later learning how to texture and colour objects in maya.

DGA120 - Life Drawing (Week 1)

Image
Today we had a 3 hour session of life drawing, using a female model which was refreshing since last term I only had male models. I also feel much more comfortable drawing female bodies as I've drawn them more often and drawing/studying myself as well. We did these in 12/15 minutes per pose. I started with this one, the first drawing being the right one, where I drew the pose too big and then couldn't see the proportions very well from my close up stance to the easel. I also didn't correct the pose that much after drawing it, so in the remaining time I did some mediocre rendering, which now I feel I should've left, as it makes it harder to see the lines of the drawing, and they aren't very good anyway. I do like the start of shading on the legs though. The second drawing on the left I did much smaller, and was therefore able to draw the proportions a lot better, however I did still have to make changes as I went along, especially the width of the whole body....

DGA130 - Experimental Animation (Week 1)

I really like the brief for this task: 'Who are you? Where do you come from? What are your likes, dislikes, your hopes for the future? Who has had an influence on your life? How do you see the world and how do you think the world sees you? It has been said since the Renaissance; “Ogni pittore dipinge sè" or, “Every painter paints himself'. I also like that we're being pushed more out of our comfort zones and into experimenting and trying things out, expanding our ideas to broader perspectives. Here are some very basic ideas I have, mainly for techniques and feelings over specific topics (which is kind of what we're meant to create anyway): Hope - Sand and piece(s) of string as a worm and another material, perhaps leaves as a beatle, they are underground and reach the world above Sad/negative feelings - Black paint on glass, Depression/closed off - charcoal Happiness and growth - mud, sticks, leaves I would really like to try mixing 2D computer animati...

DGA140 - Sound Project (Week 1)

We have been tasked with doing the foley and dialogue for an animated short, of which there are 2 we can pick from, and I picked the first one which is an advert for vodafone showing the story of a mayfly who's life expectancy is only one day, and how they live it to the fullest they can. The video features a mayfly coming out of water in a jungle, and continues flying around and meeting another mayfly and playing tennis with web balls etc. so I need to think of ways to make these sounds using objects that I can record in the foley studio to edit over it. I will also need jungle ATMOS to give the video its atmosphere and background for depth. Here's a list I've made while watching the video of what sounds I need and some ideas to go with them: Voiceover (script) Jungle ATMOS Music - Flowing Air by Mattia Vlad Morleo MF (mayfly) moving in water Wings and legs popping up MF jumping out of water MF flying MF flying up above the canopies - quieter/echoey ATMOS MF d...
