2D Background shot (Week 8)

Image
Today I've been doing sort of thumb nailing with colours to see what kind of time of day and feel I want my background shot to have.  I went through quite a few different colour schemes as I was trying to capture twilight time of day, as it's my favourite - however, as I am taking 2D in motion studies and I will also be using this background shot to put character animation in, I thought it would be better if it was set earlier in the day, so it is now more early sunset time of day. I wanted to have the beautiful dramatic colours and highlights and shadows of sunset. For the final colouring, I want to have much more oranges and reds in the foreground area, having it get to a blue hue at the very back in the hills. I am going to make sure I look at as much reference material as possible to really give the shot a realistic look while also capturing the magical light of the golden hour. I also need to keep in mind that I am painting in the style of Marc Bohne, who's trees an...

Motion Studies (Week 8)

Image
Here is a cycle animation I've created to use in my motion studies main animation project, which will be 5 characters doing different varied things in the 2D background shot that we're creating as well.

2D background tasks (Week 7)

Image
One of our tasks to do along with our 2D background shot is to roughly copy the composition of animation backgrounds from animated classics (references from animationbackgrounds.blogspot.com ): My notes from studying this background's composition: The foreground is dark and less detailed in tone and colour in comparison to the middle ground, however it has a very strong storytelling silhouette, showing the accent of gold to further emphasise how much gold is in this room, even in the shadows and darker corners of the room. This silhouette quickly tells the viewer that this room is full of treasured items and is stacked to the top of the frame and viewpoint and further up, giving a sense of awe and bewilderment. The darker mountains of gold behind the gate create a lot of contrast between light and dark which helps frame the area, making your eyes move to that area of the composition as it seems further away. The gate is seen from a low angle, feeling rather intimidatin...

Life Drawing (Week 7)

Image
Yesterday we had our second life drawing session of this term, and had a different model to last time which was interesting.  These were done with my non-dominant hand, which for me is left:  These were drawn after looking at the model and the pose for 1 minute, and then the model moved out of the pose while we had to draw the pose we memorised. I found this extremely difficult, as I think I'm just so used to only drawing what I see in life drawing, so to be forced to draw what is not there anymore was new and I wasn't used to it - as you can see, I sort of got the poses down but there is very little accurate detail or anatomy, and they feel like they're floating.

Motion Studies Lip Sync (Week 7)

Image
Here is my animation of lip sync and emotion, which I created in TVPaint.  I recorded a video of myself acting this out and of course saying "I love you", which ended up showing the emotions of stubborness to exasperated, and just outright saying how they felt about the person they're talking to.

Clouds practice (Week 7)

Image
In our 2D background lesson we learnt how to use Yuumei's custom cloud and star brushes in Photoshop as well as their tutorial on clouds. Here is my drawings using them: We we also taught how to render in lens flare from the 'sun', so I changed mine to be a sunset/nighttime: Here is Yuumei's tutorial we used from deviantArt (https://yuumei.deviantart.com/art/Cloud-Tutorial-Part-1-396507964):

2D Background (Week 6)

Image
Last week I started this study of my artist Marc Bohne's painting, trying to emulate his style and I finished it today. I was also looking at the atmospheric scattering with the different levels of hills, getting closer to the colour of the sky as they get further away. Here is my copy, done using Photoshop: Here is Marc Bohne's painting:

Mudbox (Week 6)

Image
Today in our 3D lesson we learnt more about Mudbox - I really enjoyed using it to make an interesting character out of the base head shape preset in the software. I then changed it gradually, playing around with the different settings like mould, smooth, cut, etc. and also the stamps, finishing off with a character I came to really like by the end, who seems to be a well traveled and experienced man with bear-like scars and a concerned face. He also reminds me of a kind and silly uncle. I also wanted to add eyes but wasn't sure how to make them look good so I made holes with the cut tool. I actually like how they came out, quite abstract and slightly eerie.
