2D Background tasks

Image
Here is the final rough copy of the composition of an animation background from animationbackgrounds.blogspot.com that I did: My notes from studying this backgrounds composition: The main focus of this composition is the statue, and its framed to the left while facing right, point his face, shield and spear to the right. This gives thinking space for the statue, showing the way he is facing towards so the viewer can see more context to what he’s “seeing”. Of course, because it’s a statue it’s not alive, however this does give the viewer more of an idea of the scale of the statue and the room. This is also helped by the light coming from above, which is shown with perspective being smaller towards the top, showing how lage these walls are and how low down below the statue is. This lighting also highlights the statue from above, focusing the viewers’ eyes on his head, spear, shield and armour, which are the most storytelling parts of his design, showing that he’s a gladiator. 3D Modelling and Texturing

Image
Here are my rendered, wireframe, and 'breaking the illusion' screenshots of my finished 3D scene in Maya: I got my textures from the following websites: https://www.pexels.com/photo/abstract-art-artificial-artistic-131634/ https://www.pexels.com/photo/carpentry-dark-dirty-hardwood-172291/ https://www.pexels.com/photo/wood-texture-trees-wood-planks-7132/ https://www.pexels.com/photo/abstract-antique-background-board-172276/ https://www.pexels.com/photo/brown-dried-log-lumber-172278/ https://www.pexels.com/photo/skull-970517/ https://www.pexels.com/photo/air-cloudiness-clouds-cloudscape-414659/ https://www.pexels.com/photo/blue-lined-flat-surface-132204/ https://www.pexels.com/photo/full-frame-shot-of-abstract-background-247666/

2D Animation Showreel

Image
Here is my showreel of animations for motion studies: Even though they definitely need improvements and in some cases need to be actually finished and cleaned up, I like the animations that I did and think the ones for the final 2D shot have a bit of personality and charm.

Background Shot with Animated Characters

Image
Here is my finished 2D background shot with parallax and animated characters: I would like to improve my animated characters and put them into this shot again, especially fixing that some of the characters only appear part way through the shot and then disappear as well, which I was trying to fix before handing in but unfortunately didn't have time to properly figure out, even after extending the beginning and ending frames and putting them into the after effects composition again. I'd also love to properly clean up and colour the characters on the left, also making the picnic characters interact more and also offer food to their son who's skipped along to them. In the end, the background shot also seems to be from above, so I need to redo the child so that he isn't from a straight side profile, but from slightly above instead. Overall, I'm really happy with how I coloured and rendered my background shot, however it would be nice to spend more time making i...

3D modelling progress (Week 10)

Image
Here is more progress on my 3D, I really like the look of it with the skydome on 'night time mode', especially as lights are more prominent and contrast more, acting as a focal point to the house with the door open. I like the composition with the roofs of the houses also pointing towards this house on the right of the frame. However I think I will have to add another light so you can see the details better, perhaps acting as a moon.

3D Mudbox Modelled Skull (Week 10)

Here is a skull I made in mudbox to use in my 3D environment project. I started with the human head base in mudbox and changed it to be a skull:

2D Background tasks (Week 9)

Image
One of our tasks to do along with our 2D background shot is to roughly copy the composition of animation backgrounds from animated classics (references from  animationbackgrounds.blogspot.com ): My notes from studying this backgrounds composition: Similarly to the Alice in Wonderland background, the hue of the shadows goes from cold blues in the foreground and background, and warm purple/oranges in the middle ground, which is especially prominent in the clouds at the bottom corners and the ones floating above the pillars. The blue shadows attract the viewers’ eyes to those areas, and because those parts form points both leading towards the middle of the composition, they act as arrows for your eyes to follow along to the gates in the center. The beams of light coming from behind the gates also act as arrows, as they get smaller in the center. The tones of the whole picture are in the same sort of range, except for the gate and especially the lightning bolts, which are much...

Finished Experimental Project

Image
Here is my finished experimental project: The music is Be Cool by Big Infinite which I found from jamendo here: https://www.jamendo.com/track/1507068/be-cool Here is my production report detailing my experiments and what I was aiming for: First, I tried paint on glass in the stop motion studio, and although I did enjoy doing it, the outcome wasn’t as good as I wanted it to be, and I felt like the abstract narrative I was thinking it was showing in my head while doing it wasn’t clear at all in the outcome. I also did it on ones rather than twos due to restriction of time and having technical difficulties for 40 minutes before I could start, so it goes too fast which I think is part of the reason why you can’t see the story as it passes by too fast. Then in the Easter holiday when I was at home, I had lots of time and space to try out new things, and I had thought of and storyboarded a simple idea to do as stop motion outside in my garden, which I was planning on doing at uni b...

Tea Project (Week 9)

Image
Here is my finished animated face for the seagull scene of my group film 'The Secret Life of Mugs' where Shannon has done the compositing and motion tracking: I also included the credits at the end that I made. The editing, foley and music in that video was done by my teammates. Tea Project Report After we chose Shannon’s idea for our film, we all decided to think of our own ideas for the mugs/teas and their personalities, as well as where they would be set. I thought of the pier/seagull mug as well as the iced tea one, and then wrote the scripts for them both. The iced tea mug is a sweet, warm woman in her late 40s who’s slightly forgetful and jolly. She is feeling rather chilly, but comes to realise that it’s only her and not the weather because she’s got ice cubes. I found a picture of a cafe in Falmouth with bright summery tables that I thought the live action backgrounds could be shot in, however I found out it had shut, and then Niamh thought of the idea to sh...

2D Background tasks - (Week 9)

Image
One of our tasks to do along with our 2D background shot is to roughly copy the composition of animation backgrounds from animated classics (references from  animationbackgrounds.blogspot.com ): My notes from studying this backgrounds composition: The complete darkness of the silhouette in the foreground frames the layout so the viewers' eyes immediately look towards the center, or "inwards" through the plane. The clear leaf and branch shapes also make it clear that the camera is coming out of a forest and into a bright, sunny clearing. The hues of this background go from cold blue/greens in the foreground to warm oranges and pinks in the midground and then gradually goes back to blues in the background again, while also becoming less saturated and more grey like the sky behind, showing distance and space through atmospheric bluing. The leaf tree type things poking out around the house create tonal contrast with the bright, illuminated house, while also sort of ...
